A window sill is the bottom piece of trim, or the ledge at the bottom of the window. while sills are a great place to put plants, they’re also a necessary part of the window, keeping out rain and making windows more energy efficient.. The first house i owned was built in 1941 and there was no trim around three sides of the windows. we did have window sills at the bottom. this made the process of hanging window shades and curtains much more complex than it would normally be.. In the window behind the sink, we put in a granite sill (matching the counters) but with no trim on the other 3 sides. when a window is finished with just painted drywall, it isn't as durable as one with wood trim, and we like to put things like flowers and plants in this window..
